Studying these photos has engendered in me feelings of astonishment for the sense of reality these photos bring. Viewing a postcard and reading from a literary text can bring different feelings and it definitely does for me. The photos show the way thins actually were, and gives visual evidence for this. Reading from a book brings more of an education about the events that went on, and the feelings it brought to the people who experienced them. Viewing photos cannot explain any reasons for what happened. However, the sense of reality is more clear in the photos.
When scrolling through the photos in "Without Sanctuary," the photo that I feel gave a strong sense of reality was the one with the spectators watching the lynghing of Jesse Washington. The mass crowds of people supporting the lynching shows how much an act like this was supported in 1916. You can see the hatred and see the acts of violence inflicted on people. In Beloved , acts of violence were also portrayed, but a different feeling was brought about for me. When reading about the scence when Sethe murders her child, I was very interested in how she resolved her struggle. I wanted to learn more about what caused her to act out violently. However, when viewing the lynching of Jesse Washington, and all the other photos, I am in such a state of astonishment that acts like this actually happened.Chelsey's Blog
